“Where?” Questions have been a part of the human experience ever since Eden’s Garden was in bloom.

Yet, it is to be noted that the first time this inquiry was raised - it was God who asked:

Genesis 3:9 NLT

Then the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”

The omniscient, sovereign Creator didn’t have a blind spot as to the whereabouts of the confused, conscience-condemned couple.

The question was rhetorical; and asked, so the “guilty pair” would have an awakening as to their spiritual condition and the futility of hiding from their Maker.

This is not a question with a quick answer. It probes the relationship between your soul and the Saviour.

Where are you in your relationship with God?

Where do you find salvation from sin?

Where will you spend eternity?

These are the most essential questions, don’t you think?

The second time such a question is asked, it’s God once again making the searching probe:

Genesis 4:9 NLT

Afterward the Lord asked Cain, “Where is your brother? Where is Abel?” “I don’t know,” Cain responded. “Am I my brother’s guardian?”

We are our brother’s keeper. Responsible living is in the context of relationship.

The Creator’s call is reconciliation- to restore harmony and wholeness to broken and estranged relationships both vertically between both God and man.

The Psalmist was not a stranger to the “Where?” question.

“Where?” - speaks to the pain in the common journey. How often has the darkness squeezed a “Where are you, Lord?” from our aching hearts and wounded souls.

Psalm 42:3 KJV

My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, “Where is thy God?”

Have you ever heard your tears talk? Emotions give a voice to the victimized,

by-passing an inadequate vocabulary and expressing, beyond words, the fearful and fragile heart.

Where are you, God? This is not for the faint at heart and out of touch with the inner- conflict that leaves one feeling lost and alone.

He hears when we can’t speak. He sees when we are blinded by grief and pain. His love never fails even in the confession of our own failings!

This is who He is. This is who we are.

“Where?” Implies that we are in need of a compass for direction, a candle for the darkness or a connection for our sense of being alone.

These are what we discover in God - our compass, our candle and our connection.
